Simply print out the employment application and mail or deliver to the Town Office, 15 School St. You can also ask for an application at the front counter of the Town Office.

1. Where do I pay the Excise Tax?

Excise Tax is paid at the local town office where the owner of the vehicle resides. When a vehicle needs to be registered, an Excise Tax is collected prior to the registration. Please call 207-864-3326 for more information.

2. How much is the Excise Tax?

The amount of tax is determined by 2 things:
Age of the Vehicle
MSRP (Manufactured Suggested Retail Price)

3. How is the Excise Tax calculated?

Excise Tax is calculated by multiplying the MSRP by the mil rate (the rates drop back on January 1st of each year):
Year 1: 0.0240 mil rate
Year 2: 0.0175 mil rate
Year 3: 0.0135 mil rate
Year 4: 0.0100 mil rate
Year 5: 0.0065 mil rate
Year 6: 0.0040 mil rate

For example, a 3 year old car with an MSRP of $19,500 would pay $263.25. Please call 207-864-3326 for more information.

4. Where does the Excise Tax go?

The town that collects the Excise Tax can use it as revenue towards the annual town budget. Typically, the revenue is spent on local road maintenance, construction, and repair. Please call 207-864-3326 for more information.

5. Why is the tax based on MSRP?

Excise Tax was designed with equity in mind. In 1925, this tax was enacted as a Maine Law. At that time, the legislature decided that the fairest tax assessment would be based on what the manufacturer suggests it sell for.

This law has remained in effect for over 90 years to ensure that everyone who drives the same vehicle pays the same amount of tax. Please call 207-864-3326 for more information.

1. How do I register to vote?

Voter registration is done in person at the Town Office. You will need a photo ID and proof of residence.

Fines can be paid here at the Town Office, 15 School St.

3. Where do I get a marriage license?

Marriage licenses can be obtained by contacting the Town Clerk.

4. How do I get an absentee ballot?

You have 3 options:

5. How do I register my out-of-state vehicle for the first time?

First time registration requires: proof of insurance, the physical title, and the last registration from the state you have moved from. If the vehicle has never been registered, you will need: proof of insurance, the physical title, and the bill of sale. Plates and registration will be issued at the office. 

Please note: if you are requesting Veteran Plates, you will need to provide a copy of your DD-214.

6. Do you accept credit/debit cards for payments?

Yes, we do. There is a 2.5% fee charged on all credit/debit transactions, with a minimum fee of $1.00.

7. What is the deadline to be included as an agenda item for the Planning Board?

Planning Board meetings are held on the 2^nd and 4^th Wednesday of each month, all required materials for Planning Board review must be received 10 calendar days in advance of the next meeting date, generally the Monday of the week prior.

8. When is a building permit required and how do I apply?

Building permits are required for any structure that is over 200 square feet in size or structures under 200 square feet that are attached to a larger permanent structure.  All structures, even those which do not require a permit, must meet the relevant Zoning District setback requirements, found in Section 38.4.7 http://www.townofrangeley.com/DocumentCenter/View/107/Chapter-38-Zoning-PDF.  Building permit applications can be found on the Town of Rangeley website, http://www.townofrangeley.com/174/Planning-Code-Enforcement-Officer, or as printed copies in the lobby of the Rangeley Town Office.  Additional permit forms may be required, please contact the Code Enforcement Office with any further questions.

9. Is the airport open on holidays?

Stephen A. Bean Municipal Airport is a public general aviation airport that is open year-round.

10. May I participate in a Zoom meeting if all of the Board / Committee members are present in person?

According to our Remote Meeting Policy, no.  The public may view the meetings in progress via Zoom, but are not allowed to participate remotely unless a member of the Board or Committee is participating in the meeting by remote means.

12. How do I sign up for a rec program?

Call ahead (Town Office), Facebook or sign up @ the location of the event listed.

13. Where do I get my dump permit / sticker?

At the Transfer Station with Proof of Residency.

14. What are the hours of operation for the Transfer Station?

Oct. 01 – May 15        Monday through Saturday, 8:15 to 4:15

May 15 – Oct. 01        Same as above plus Sunday 9:00 to 1:00.

15. When can we bring brush to the Transfer Station?

Any day we are open until ½ hour before closing.

16. What can be recycled at the Transfer Station?

Zero-sort items:          Cardboard, Plastics #1 to #7, Office paper, Magazines, Newspaper, Mail, and Glass.

 Metal is acceptable but aids us if it’s separated out.

17. What is allowed to be brought to the Bargain Barn at the Transfer Station?

We can accept anything that is not broken, ripped, or stained and is usable as is without needing to be repaired.

We CANNOT accept TV’s, computers or monitors in the Barn.  They are a Universal Waste product and are disposed of separately.

18. Can I have fill material?

Fill out a request/ permit (at the Town Office or on the web page) and we will add you to the list.

19. My plumbing isn't working - who do I call?

Start by calling you plumber and if needed follow up with Brackett's pumping for camera services. You will be reimbursed if the findings point back to the Public Sewer System.

20. When do the docks go in / out?

In- when ice is officially declared out and the town feels conditions are safe.

Out- Typically after Columbus Day (indigenous people day) weekend. Weather and water level dependent.
